From Wednesday 1st June 2016, the opening hours at Suffolk's Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will be changing to offer site users extended hours on Sundays, Bank Holidays, and on a Thursday evening during the summer months, reflecting the times when the sites are most used and needed by residents.

The busiest times of the week for these sites are the weekend and bank holidays. The quietest day of the week is consistently a Wednesday and therefore all sites will be closed on a Wednesday.

The new opening times for Suffolk's Household Waste Recycling Centres are as follows:

April - September

Monday 9am - 5pm

Tuesday 9am - 5pm

Wednesday Closed*

Thursday 9am - 5pm (late night opening until 7pm from May - Aug*)

Friday 9am - 5pm

Saturday 9am - 5pm

Sunday 9am - 5pm*

October - March

Monday 9am - 4pm

Tuesday 9am - 4pm

Wednesday Closed

Thursday 9am - 4pm

Friday 9am - 4pm

Saturday 9am - 4pm

Sunday 9am - 4pm

*from 1st June 2016All sites are closed 25, 26 December and 1 January

Site surveys conducted in February 2016 showed support for the changes, with 77% agreeing with proposed changes to opening hours. 97% of survey responses said they would visit another weekday or weekend day if the sites were closed on Wednesday. 1682 people completed site surveys; 1482 on site, 200 via online. The busiest and quietest periods were calculated using traffic count surveys on sites. Traffic counts show that on average sites receive 359 visitors on a Wednesday compared to 461 on a Sunday.

Councillor Matthew Hicks, Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection at Suffolk County Council, said: “Feedback received from Recycling Centre users across Suffolk told us that people wanted to see the sites open for longer during the busiest periods. So from 1st June, all Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open for longer on Sundays, Bank Holidays and later on Thursday evenings during the summer months.”

All relevant site signage is being updated ready for the new operating timetable which begins on 1st June. A new leaflet will be available at every site for people to take away, including a handy business card with the new opening times.
