Wines of the Month We’re off to Spain for this month’s pairing. Your red is from Alicante on the Costa Blanca and is made from 100% Monastrell (more familiarly called Mourvedre in France) vines. The wine spends six months maturing in oak barrels, and is certified organic and suitable for vegans: “Dark and dense in colour with rich blackberry /blueberry aromas; the palate is substantial and intense, jam-packed with masses of robust, youthful fruit”. Your white is a 2018 Verdejo from Rueda, about 100km east from the top corner of Portugal. Interestingly, the grapes are harvested at night so the cooler conditions help to preserve the freshness of the fruit: “Dry and clean with a herby note and touches of tropical fruit, this is dry and loaded with fresh, bright flavours of vivid intensity”.
