The online Auction of Promises came to a close at midnight on Sunday 6 December. After a flurry of late bids, the grand total raised is £2,125 to help fund the cost of vital repairs to St Mary the Virgin Church, situated in the heart of the village.
The church building dates back to the 14th century. Major restoration was carried out in 1866 and since then there have been other important renovation works. Now in 2020 the church tower roof is in urgent need of repair and the usual fundraising activities of the village have been curtailed due to the pandemic.
The auction was truly a village event. There were 22 promises comprising the auction lots donated by individuals in the parish and 2 promises from residents of neighbouring parishes. Many people made bids during the three weeks of the online auction creating a lot of interest on the progress on each lot. 5 lots received only one bid whilst others were in a serious competition. There was a flurry of bidding on Sunday 6 December, the last day, with the last bid at 11.43pm.
All proceeds of the auction will go towards the church tower roof repairs. Updates on fundraising and progress of the repairs will be available on the village website and the Brettenham Magazine throughout 2021. St. Mary’s church council wishes to thank all those who provided lots for the auction and everyone who entered bids.
